By now most of our friends and family know that we are heading back to PCB. Are we lucky or what! So even though we have to leave the beautiful Virgin Islands for now it’s not like we have to go to the great white north! Oh thank you, thank you! Don’t get us wrong because leaving here where it is in the mid 70’s and having to go to where it is like a high of 55 today is going to be enough of a shocker for us! Burr…I think I need a jacket just thinking about it!
Walking up, up, up the hill to Fort Segarra.
Walking back from Fort Segarra, St. Thomas in the background.
Door leading into Fort Segarra. Fort Segarra is an underground fort, part of the United States’ defense strategies during World War II. Its purpose was to help protect a submarine base on St. Thomas. The war ended before its completion and the project was subsequently abandoned. The building mostly underground was very creepy with unlit tunnels and staircases leading to dark compartments. We stuck to the lit areas as we explored!
On 19 June 1944, the U.S. Department of Defense acquired Water Island from the East Asiatic Company (West Indian Company) thru condemnation proceedings (eminent domain) for $10,000 for the explicit purpose of establishing a coastal defense installation on the island. The military facility on Water Island was named Fort Segarra in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Rafael Angel Segarra (from Puerto Rico) a highly decorated WW I veteran.
Brian pretending that his flashlight is a machine gun…or maybe it is a lazer beam he is using to protect the harbor…lol!
Rachel descending into the tunnels of the fort.
In early 1946 construction on Water Island was abruptly halted before the 6” coastal artillery and 40mm/90mm guns could be installed. Total cost was estimated at $900,000. December 1947 records show the value of construction on Water Island at $1,583,055. That was a lot of money for 1947!
Rachel is standing on top of one of the tunnels that lead to the unknown below…we did not venture into this one, it was very dark and creepy!
Beautiful view of St. Thomas from the top of Fort Segarra.
View from the top of Water Island looking towards St. Thomas’s south- west coast.
Anyhow, we’ve still been having lots of fun and have lots of pictures to share with you. As always hope that you enjoy!
Hmmm, I think that they are waiting on more than a few parts…
We saw a few of these coconut heads hanging around Water Island. Not sure what that was about hopefully not some voodoo thing!
Just in case you are not sure what to do after you stop 🙂

We are so excited that will get to see all of our family and friends again soon! It’s only for a short while though. At the end of the summer season we are going back to cruising again. We’re leaving our boat in Puerto Rico for the time being. Then we plan on flying back to the boat just before the heart of hurricane season. On that thought pray for no big storms this year! Not sure what we will be posting here when we get back home but I will try to get some PCB stuff on here at least once a month. There is plenty of excitement there too and being away for over a year now maybe I will be seeing it in a whole new way.
When we arrived in Red Hook, St. Thomas it looked like it was spring break with lots of partying going on this beach.
After talking to my dad again he said that he remembered that he played at Duffy’s when he was in St. Thomas….here it is as it stands now. It used to be in Charlotte Amelia but now is located in Red Hook, St. Thomas.

The lights to to left of the photo was a hula-hoop that had lights in it. It was very cool! The band playing is the The Get Right Band. The Get Right Band played at Dinghys Full Moon Party. They are from Asheville NC. Great band! Check them out…

Dinghys full moon party. Theme was Mermaids, butterflys and mythical creatures…the bikini wearer in the back is the male bartender that was nice enough to pose for us. Rachel was called “Hawaii Girl” all night by everyone…love the headband!
