On the Move, Final Days at Long Island

Posted by on April 18, 2014

We are finally on the move and currently anchored in the harbor in French Wells, Crooked Island, Bahamas. We loved the time we spent in Long Island. The day before we left Thompson Bay we celebrated “TED-LESS TED-FEST”. Ted is a cruiser that was supposed to be in the bay for his birthday and a party was planned for his big day. Unfortunately Ted’s boat ran aground when he was sailing out of Georgetown and he was unable to make it in time for his party. Did that stop us? No way we partied on without Ted….a few of the cruisers made a cardboard replica of Ted so that he could sorta be there to enjoy the fun. We headed out the next day but we heard that the Ted replica made it’s rounds all around town and even down to the Sunday beach party.

Cardboard Ted is sad that he did not make to to "TED-FEST"

When we left Thompson Bay Brian was feeling a bit adventurous and decided to take a less traveled route to the Sand Keys to cut off about 4 hours of travel time. Why do you ask is it a less traveled route? Because in spots it shows to have less than 2ft in parts of the channel and about 5ft at the very most…needless to say we had an adventure.

(We draw about 4ft with our rudder down and about 3ft with it up)

We prayed and plowed and prayed and plowed our way through and thankfully made it to the other side. Good thing that it was just soft sand that we were pushing through! Brian said that he wanted to see what he could get away with that day, well we got away with it but I hope that he’s got that one out of his system because I won’t be trying that again!

We anchored for a couple of nights in Dollar Harbor. It was absolutely gorgeous! This place really reminded us of Shroud Cay. The color of the shallows and channels that snake around the island are very similar. Just incredible!

Next stop for us was Gordon’s where we rolled around for the night anchored just off of the beach in a swell before heading out the next day to the south end of Long Island where would sail across the Crooked Island Passage to Crooked and Acklins, Bahamas our next stop. When we were heading out from Gordon’s we ran into another trimaran that was heading the same way. Pretty cool, it was a fellow sailor (Dick) that we had met in Thompson’s Bay and he was heading to Crooked Island too. We had a buddy boat to cross the passage with so that was nice.

Here we sit as I mentioned currently in French Wells, another beautiful spot. We’re anchored almost in the exact same place as we did the last time that we were here. Makes us think of our crew that came with us last time too, Brian’s dad Charlie. We’ve been thinking lots about him as we visit some of the same spots as before. Brings back nice memories…missing you dad!!

We’re hoping to see some Pink Flamingos. Per our guidebook they are supposed to be some in this area. We missed them last time but we’re hoping to get lucky this time and find them. Wish us luck, now time for us to get out and explore. Until next time take care all.
