Bimini, Bahamas

Bimini is always a favorite of ours. I love finding sea glass on their beaches! Not sure why but we have only been able to find sea glass on the beach here in Bimini and at a small beach in Negril, JA. I always look when beach combing but have never found it anywhere else. Anyhow we were successful and ended up taking a large bag full. We could have taken so much more but as always we need to watch how much extra weight we add to the boat.A big bag of sea glass is pretty heavy!

We anchored right next to Big Game Club. This place is a must see if you ever come to Bimini. Nice restaurant. They even have vegetarian choices, this is rare in the islands and it was nice to order something other than a salad. This is a good place to people watch and if you are so inclined they have a shark cage that you can get into and “swim” with the bull sharks that they feed. Great entertainment, they have lots of sharks swimming around. This is good if you want to be in the cage to check them out but not so good if you want to swim off the side of your boat in the same area. Unless of course you like being shark bait….not me!

We tried our best to get some great shark photos. Brian even attached our underwater camera to a pole and rowed the dinghy over next to the shark cage where they were swimming all over the place but he was not successful in getting any jaw dropping shots. Not for lack of trying though, I’m sure that the people there thought that he was nuts rowing all around with the sharks going crazy! I stayed back at the boat. I don’t like having sharks swimming around and underneath me. Go figure…

Brian did some kayaking around the flats but we did not do much else in Bimini. Just relaxing is nice too. We bought a phone and internet card so we are once again able to communicate….yea!

We took our chance when the winds were light to cross the Great Bahamas Banks, anchoring by the Northwest Channel Light at a little more than the halfway point for the night and continuing on the next day to Chub Cay. (It’s always a good idea to travel in daylight so that you can watch out for coral heads and rocks) First day out was nothing but light winds but day two the wind and waves picked up considerably, against us for the most part and we plowed our way across the Tongue of the Ocean to Chub. This seems to be a trend for us every time that we sail to Chub, going against big waves and winds so I guess that we should be used to it. Never any fun though!

We’re anchored in a great spot, in a small channel that goes between Chub and Crab Cay. Mostly local conch boats anchor in here but we have seen a couple of other catamarans come about halfway down the channel and anchor for the night since we’ve been here. It’s a spot that most boats can’t get too because it is shallow…very shallow, but it has been prefect for us.

It has been pretty windy since we’ve been here but with the anchorage so protected we are sitting in quite smooth waters. Brian has been sanding and grinding and fiber-glassing taking advantage of the nice calm harbor before we move on to Nassau.

We’re gonna hang around here for a few more days, play at the beach some and explore around in the dinghy…love having a motor, we can explore much more now!!
